andy gallagher

andy making the most of zoom lens

I've long been interested in TV and broadcast and came to Magic Lantern after a spell freelancing in broadcast TV. My work is specifically on our video projects, mostly as an editor, but I also operate cameras and enjoy getting on-set as much as possible. I started off working with cameras and keep it up as much as I can - in my spare time I've lit and shot several short films and edited music videos. I combine the more creative work with video production management and post-production management, especially on the larger projects, and I supervise our video archive.

anthony lilley

'who stole my pie?' anthony asks

Anthony's job is to enthusiastically ask his favourite question - why not? He asks this of everyone from government departments, industry bodies, regulators to clients. But the answers at Magic Lantern are always the most exciting, fun and profitable. He sees his role as to get great people together to do meaningful things. That's what a company is about.

ben wharton

ben - is a bit shy

Ben is Magic Lantern’s Post Production Supervisor. Happy with both sides of his brain, Ben loves where artistry, humanity and technology meet. Which means he’s interested in far too many things. Ten years in television production hasn’t been enough so Ben has programmed digital animation festivals, written features for visual effects magazines, script edited short films, written and produced websites championing independent filmmaking and has been known to take some mildly impressive snaps of things while away on holiday.

Among Ben’s more intense memories are a stint in a corn processing factory in Minnesota and watching a live-orchestra accompanied ballet under a full moon in Perth, Australia.

Sophie Henderson

Sophie

Sophie first used the internet at the tender age of 10, and hasn't stopped. She built her first page at 14 (in FrontPage *cringe*) and has been tinkering with web technologies since! Sophie likes nature, CSS (the web kind, not the music kind), chocolate cake, the internet, Fruli, sunshine and laughter. She doesn't like IE6, pollution, hangovers, peas, hassle and writing about herself in the third person.

dave sutton

dave: always happy to be included

Dave became the video editing assistant at Magic Lantern after leaving university where he studied Media Technology. What he lacks in experience he makes up for in enthusiasm. With a keen interest in video for the web and graphic design Dave is hoping to enjoy a long and prosperous career in the media.

There is no accounting for his musical taste which covers anything from Bob Dylan to Massive Attack.

Dino

dino forcefully restrained for company photo

BA (Hons) Graphic Design. An Italian web/graphic designer aka - www.kingpixel.net. Loves relaxing it up, good food and a small dose of entertainment every once in a while. Came to London in 2002 looking for fame and fortune, and joined the Magic Lantern in October 2006. Loves music, gigs, travel and his pet fish Poke.

fleur saunders-davies

fleur: smiling as ever

Fleur spent two years working at a London Theatrical Agency. Helping to find work for actors in theatre, film and television was hectic but enjoyable. This background has more than enabled Fleur to handle the ‘lovey’ side of Magic Lantern but by her own admission she is still getting her head around the ‘geek’ aspect of the company (this may take some time yet)!

Fleur grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, and loves to go back to visit her family as much as possible and if she can’t make it that far across the world anywhere else will do.

When Fleur isn’t managing the hectic lives and schedules of Anthony and Paula she’s most likely to be planning her next trip, at the theatre, seeing live music or going on London adventures with her boyfriend.

Richard Ayers

richard is in a dark room smiling

Richard is Magic Lantern’s Editorial Development Director. After seven years in charge of the Tiscali portal, and winning Best Portal at the ISPAs for the last two years, he knows how to make an effective editorial operation in a highly commercial environment. At Magic Lantern, he will use his experience to take top level creative work and deliver it cost-effectively and commercially for partners who need to differentiate themselves in a competitive and convergent business landscape.

Richard began his media career on BBC local radio but in 1994 he moved to Radio 4's Today Programme where he started working online. He was one of the founding members of the award-winning BBC News Online site and won a Bafta for his online journalism before going commercial in 1999.

He does not have kids, does not live in surrey and has no interest in fly fishing.

ian robson

ian trying to look arty and less like a c# developer

Ian is a web developer at Magic Lantern. Although specialising in .Net, Ian enjoys a variety of different challenges: from XHTML and CSS at the front-end through to SQL Server behind the scenes. Excited by the web itself as well as the technologies behind it, Ian enjoys the feeling of having his work, ideas and creations available around the world. While the information superhighway keeps growing, Ian hopes to keep trucking on its digital tarmac. Outside of IT Ian's a down-to-earth Northerner with a passion for music and an introverted but friendly manner.

Greg Baker

Greg Baker

Greg moved to London from South Africa and really likes the fact the the electricity at Magic Lantern never fails!

joe elliot

joe

Joe started life as a cell, then quickly split and kept at it until there were enough cells to go out and earn a living, which they did variously as an anthropologist, teacher, technical writer and editor. Yet the cells all longed to work together, and finally had the chance when they discovered interactive learning media. There followed five blissful years designing educational games for Dorling Kindersley.

As the gap between learning theory and commercial practice got too elephant-like to ignore, they jumped into it and set up their own company, SeeThinkDo. Where they were truly happy, inventing massively multiplayer learning with Footee, mathematical a-life with Futurelab, smart robot games for LEGO, collaborative learning systems for the BBC and a little something for just about everyone in the industry.

But the cells had bigger ideas still, so they persuaded Joe to join Magic Lantern as Director of Learning. It seems to be working: now he’s running the biggest and most exciting project of his life and arming the user-led learning revolution. And the cells get to play with PSPs all day and pretend they’re ‘prototype learning devices’.

joe kelly

Joe, not hittin the drums

Joe, having worked for various production companies in the past has just rejoined Magic Lantern after a 3-year stopgap. During this time he was a Dance music producer with releases on some major labels, a Drummer in a band having clocked up 30ish gigs and a Drum salesman at an MI shop. Now back at MLP he still has his fingers in the dance music production pie, but also plays percussion in techno clubs with DJs adding an extra groove where needed.

Hoping to spawn a career in new media he is, for now, the production assistant for the team here.

He loves music in all shapes and forms, cats, cartoons, hot weather and the eating of food (particularly the curried variety).

kylie henderson

kylie - not that kylie

All the way from clean, green New Zealand, Kylie joined Magic Lantern in July 2006.

With a Bachelor of Communications degree and a background in television production, Kylie Production Manages the various video projects that come through the door, and is starting to (try!) to get her head around the interactive side aswell! Believing in ‘seizing the day’, when not working she can be found hanging out with partner Miles, socialising with her ever-expanding group of mates (including her 5 house-mates), and travelling as much as possible, frequenting the popular international festivals all of which usually while wearing her ‘kiwi uniform’ of black top & blue jeans.

Motto : Theres no such thing as a dumb question

Warning : Don’t ever confuse her for an Australian

lori camm

Lori...Lori...Lori

Lori was originally involved with theatre, performance art and as a vocalist for various bands. She came to Magic Lantern after a long spell running her own digital transformation company and collaborating with Ultralab - the world leading ICT learning research centre. Having spent 7 years as part of a multidisciplinary team that included artists, musicians, educationalists, economists and psychologists to name but a few.

Working together with people at Oracle, BBC, Design Council, School Works and the National Film and Television School, she spent most of her time experimenting with the possibilities of emerging technologies: creating dynamic and motivational digital experiences, building online communities, and developing participative and collaborative design processes.

Some Loves: Working together in creative teams to produce beautiful, stimulating and functional designs: Haribo sweets and garden birds.

Some Hates: Sticking 'design' on at the end of the process as an after-thought. Closed minds and sprouts.

lucas jones

lucas - by why can't we code and play football at the same time?

Lucas is Brazilian, with a fascination for life and making the most of any opportunities. His main aim is to create binary places so everyone can enjoy life on the computer. He studied at one of the top 5 universities in Brazil, UFRGS (Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul), studying computer science. Lucas was coding flash as a kid and steadily progressed from there to become a professional flash developer in 2002. Lucas has continued to learn more and more while being in the UK.

When Lucas first arrived in the UK he was informed that the Queen pays for people to own dogs. This was paid monthly into your account. Seems this may be a secret kept from the general public unless there is some special trade agreement with Brazil - secretly Lucas still believes this.

matt smith

matt: is a bit shy

Having studied at a Fine Art school and specialising in Graphic Design, closest area to 3d CGI graphics at the time, allowing me to continue a fascination with 3d but without the risk of clay sculptures exploding in a kiln.

Next stop was the computer games industry, creating a variety of 3d worlds, models and interfaces for flight Sims, sports games and art direction, concepts and art direction for character based racing games.

Freelance work beckoned with a variety of work that led to working on two projects with Magic Lantern. I then ventured into developing 3d games and media graphics for the education market and the identity for ‘Glow’ Learning and Teaching Scotland.

Continuing with learning projects and combining video I’m back full-time at Magic Lantern adding a sprinkling of 3d worlds to their latest work.

Personal likes: Films, Cycling, Gadgets and Art – my ideal home would be The Tate Modern, spacious apartment well placed for getting around town. For now I’ll just have to visit and ask people to wipe their feet on the way in.

Favourite work/obsession Umberto Bocciono, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space

Come on Matt, tell us.

mayur upadhyaya

I'm a dataset kinda guy

Mayur has been at Magic Lantern for seven years, and has become a well established part of the furniture.

He is a geek-in-denial, scoring low in the geek test - some suggest a ruse.

He learnt BASIC before he could ride a bike, he is proud to have used Q-DOS (quick and dirty DOS) before it became MS-DOS and is clearly a vintage fashion victim.

Which is just as well as he has some strategic technical responsibilities, often codes and is an information architect.

When not at work, Mayur is trying to advance from playing just one song on the guitar (Blackbird), listening to music over ten years old (indie), and pretending that his 3D graphics don't look passé...

A long time wannabe geek and an old luvvy, Paula now finds herself MD of Magic Lantern and perfectly at home. She has been working in New Media since the time when it was actually new. tom bland

tom: far from bland

Tom roams the plains of Magic Lantern scavenging animation work and occasionally bringing down the young or frail from a passing herd. His vision is based on movement and if you remain absolutely still you might escape him providing you don't smell too meaty. Besides animation he loves illustration, photography, walks on pre-cretaceous beaches and brains. He dislikes un-imagination, large meteorites and evolution.

Tom is cold blooded and has a top speed of just under 40mph.

Tom lays eggs.
